Message from the President of the Chemical Society of Japan

The Collaboration of Asia-Pacific Chemical Societies for the Sustainable Development

On behalf of our 35,000 members of the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) and with my great pleasure, I would like to send heartfelt congratulations to the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS), on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

CSJ has been involved in the activities of FACS from its preparative stage as an active member, although CSJ joined it a little late. In 1997, we hosted the Asian Chemical Congress held in Hiroshima as an independent international conference that collected almost 900 participants from 26 countries and 2 areas. (chairman; Professor Tominaga) and from the year Prof. Ohtaki served as the president of FACS for two years. In addition, quite a few of our members have participated in various activities of FACS.

The objective of FACS is stated as ¡°to promote the advancement of chemistry and the interest of professional chemists in the Asia-Pacific region¡±. This is appropriate, if one considers the importance of chemistry in the society. But now we may need to go beyond this. Although modern chemistry and chemical technology have made enormous progress in the past and have brought prosperity and a higher standard of living in many countries. However, we recognize that the progress of science and technology also brings challenges to protect the environment as well as the health and safety of Earth¡¯s citizens. Hence we should think about in which direction and how we must promote chemistry and chemical technology. ¡°Chemistry for sustainable human society and environment, or ¡°Green Chemistry¡±, is likely the possible direction.

Asia-Pacific region has a high potential of growth in science and technology as well as in economy and therefore the sound progress of chemistry and chemical technology is most needed for the sustainable development. We wish that FACS continues the efforts to promote mutual understanding and collaboration of all chemistry-related societies in the region to make chemistry very useful for sustainable development. CSJ is willing to work together with FACS for the purpose.
