A symposium on Chemical Education was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia organized by the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry from March 29 to 31 2002.
A regional symposium on "Curriculum Development in Undergraduate Chemistry" was held on 22 June 2002 in Colombo, Sri Lanka under the organization of the College of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon. Heads and Professors of Sri Lankan Universities were present and a booklet on the curriculum changes envisaged in the Sri Lankan Universities was made available. Prof. M Ahmed , a member of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission and a professor of Organic Chemistry was present on support provided through seed funds by FACS.
Among other foreign delegates who were present and made important contributions were Prof. Farida Akhtar from Bangladesh, Prof. John Hill from Australia and Dr Amara Jayaweera from UK. A very useful interchange of ideas took place at the end of which a three member panel was appointed to draft a working paper on a revised curriculum.
Forthcoming activities include the first ever Conference on Chemical Education to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in April 2004 and we look forward to the presence of foreign resource chemists.
