FACS Newsletter 2/2003 Message from the FACS President
Since July 2001 the FACS Secretariat has been maintained by the RACI in Australia; the second occasion in the history of the FACS. Dr San Thang has undertaken the task of Secretary-General supported by the office staff at the RACI headquarters in Melbourne. The FACS EXCO has worked together as a team and I have been fortunate to have such good cooperation and support during my term as President.
The activities of the FACS have proceeded as scheduled with EXCO meetings being held on 4 occasions since Brisbane in July 2001. These were as follows :
|

|
| 37th EXCO Singapore December 2001 |
38th EXCO Kuala Lumpur March 2002 |
| 39th EXCO Dhaka January 2003 |
40th EXCO Melbourne May 2003 |
The 10th Asian Chemistry Congress and 12 General Assembly followed by 41st EXCO meeting to be held at Hanoi, Vietnam are all on track.
It was possible to be involved with some additional activities during my term as President. A number of anniversary meetings were held including the 25th Anniversary of the Bangladesh Chemical Society in association with the 39th EXCO meeting at Dhaka. The 70th Anniversary of the Chinese Chemical Society was held at Taipei in October 2002 and the 125th Anniversary of the Chemical Society of Japan, the latter attended by the Emperor of Japan. See other reports in this issue on these events.
Attention was directed to some unexpected activities arising from the terrorist activity following September 11 and the disruption caused by the SARS virus episode. The latter prevented the attendance of the Taipei members to the 40th EXCO meeting held at Melbourne. This was an opportunity to try out teleconference to bring Dr Johnsee Lee and Professor Tahsin Chow together with the EXCO members who were in Melbourne. This was a successful experiment and may be used again in the future.
Selection of awardees for the 2003 FACS awards was very challenging and reflected the very high standard of candidates who are drawn from our region. All awardees for 2003 are of the highest standard.
We now look to the Chemical Society of Vietnam to run the FACS Secretariat from October 2003 until 2005. We also look forward to hearing more of the planning for 11 ACC by the Korean Chemical Society.
I will remain an EXCO member as Past-President until the 13th General Assembly to be held in Korea in 2005 and will support Professor Ho Si Thoang during his term as President.
Dr. Barry N Noller, President
The Federation of Asian Chemical Societies
