June 9, 2001 (Revised August 24, 2002)

1. Activities November 1999-June 2001

1.1. Panel Discussion: Internet and Chemistry in 8th Asian Chemical Congress This panel discussion session was held at 13:30-16:00 in the November 22nd 1999, as part of the Special Symposium on Chemical Education in the 8th ACC, Taipei, with four panelists and about forty audiences. Abstracts and some additional materials are available in the ACEN home page at
http://www.t.soka.ac.jp/chem/ACEN/8accpanel/.

1.2. Electronic publication:
(1) Proceedings of the 8ACC Special Symposium on Chemical Education Proceedings of the Symposium was edited in collaboration with Professors Chung-Yuan Mou (National Taiwan University, Taiwan) and Professor Yoshito Takeuchi (Kanagawa University, Japan), the organizers. With twelve contributions, it was published in June 2000 as volume 4 issue 1 of the Chemical Education Journal (CEJ,
url = http://www.juen.ac.jp/scien/cssj/cejrnlE.html), an electronic journal on chemical education published in Japan. The issue is available at
url =http://ce.t.soka.ac.jp/cejed/v4n1/indexE.html.

(2) Proceedings of the 9ACC Symposium "Chemistry and Community" (in progress)
In 9ACC the above symposium is focused on chemical education. Again, the Chemical Education Journal accepted our proposal for publishing the proceedings in its next issue (volume 5, issue 2). With the aid of symposium organizers, we invited the contributors to the Symposium to submit their papers to the proceedings. Deadline is set at mid August and the issue will be published by the end of this year.

We are grateful to the editorial board of CEJ for collaboration.

1.3. Supporting Program for speakers in 9ACC symposium on Chemical Education
Among the contributors to the 9ACC Symposium "Chemistry and Community", two from the developing countries were nominated based on the recommendation of the symposium organizers. Each candidate will have $250 support from the project seed fund at the Symposium site, under condition of presenting a paper there.

1.4. Home page and Mailing List:
Continuing effort has been made in managing and renewing the ACEN home page. Some of the pages are sharing contents with the home page of IUPAC Committee on Teaching of Chemistry (CTC) to save time and effort. We are asking the new FACS member societies (Russia and Mongolia) to contribute with the article "Chemical Education in the country" with an offer of subsidy, and waiting for their response. A Russian institute contributed with an article on catalysis education in Russian universities. ACEN mailing list now contains about 70 addresses outside Japan, with 20 FACS countries and five others.

2. Proposal for future activities
In addition to the continuous effort for collecting and presenting information through the ACEN home page, the following activities are planned.

2.1. Cooperation with International Conferences and Meetings
Possible cooperation with international congresses and meetings on chemical education held in the Asian-Pacific region is one of the important roles of ACEN. In 2002, two events are scheduled:

  • Asian Symposium on "Information and Communication Technology in Chemical Education, Research and Development 2002, 29-30 March 2002, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • 15th International Conference on Chemical Education, August 2002, Beijing, China.

2.2. Publication of an International Journal on Chemical Education in the
Asian-Pacific region: an electronic journal
Some people working for the development of chemical education pointed out the lack of an opportunity to publish their works. This means the lack of journals on chemical education, either domestic or international. Some countries, such as Australia, China, and Japan, have their own domestic journal while other countries not. Publication of an international journal focused on chemical education for the Asian-Pacific region is needed. ACEN will consider the way to meet the needs, possibly, by electronic publishing.

3. New Directors nominated for 2001-2003
Director: Professor J. N. Oleap Fernando (Sri Lanka): jnfer@ou.ac.lk
Co-Director: Dr. Zakaria Zuriati (Malaysia):
