Invitation to host 10th Asian Chemical Congress
and 12th General Assembly of FACS 2003

This invitation message was mailed to all FACS member societies in August 2000. In this message you will find history and requirement of the ACC and reinforce your understanding to FACS. Until now, FACS secretariat has already received application from Chemical Society of Vietnam.

Dear President/Secretary-General:
The goal of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS) is "Regional cooperation in chemistry". The formation of the FACS is to provide a channel of communication and collaboration among the chemical societies in Asia-Pacific region. The Asian Chemical Congress (ACC) is intended to be a significant scientific chemistry event in this region. It will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences and latest information on chemistry among members.

The Congress is held biennially. The previous ACC Congresses were held in Manila, the Philippines (1995), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1993), Beijing, China (1991), Brisbane, Australia (1989), Seoul, Korea (1987), and Singapore (1985). The last two Congresses (Hiroshima 1997 and Taipei 1999) have attracted 800 and 1,600 participants, respectively. The scientific programs of ACC have included plenary and keynote lectures from a number of Nobel Laureates and other eminent scientists.

The General Assembly (GA) of the Council will meet and discuss the present and future activities of FACS during the ACC. The council consists of one representative of each member society.

On behalf of the President of FACS, Dr. Johnsee Lee I would like to extend my cordial invitation to all member societies to consider hosting 12th General Assembly and 10th ACC of FACS in 2003. Formal proposals should be submitted to the Secretariat no later than the deadline of December 31, 2000.

These two events (GA and ACC) can be scheduled to run sequentially or concurrently. The Congress normally runs about four days while the General Assembly requires one full day. The General Assembly requires a conference room with a capacity 30~35 persons for the delegates of each member society. Also a meeting room for the Executive Committee (EXCO) Meeting with a capacity 10~12 persons.

The host country assumes full financial responsibility for both events, and any surplus from the Congress remains with the host country. Enclosed below is a reference list of the facilities requires for the General Assembly and the Congress.

The host country for the General Assembly and the Congress should provide enough facilities:
1. Sound equipment: Wireless Microphone, Clip-on Microphone, Recording etc.
2. Audio-Visual Equipment: Laser Pointer, Slide Projector, Overhead Projector etc.
3. Plenary Hall for opening ceremony, plenary lectures; Conference Rooms for concurrent sessions.
4. Secretariat Office.
5. Reception for Delegates and Guests.
6. Food & Beverage Facilities.
7. Coffee/tea/drinks stations available for breaks.
8. Computer rooms with PC computers and internet access.
9. Drink water to be provided for each meeting room on a regular basis.

We very much encourage informal proposals and queries prior to the deadline of December 31, 2000. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Kan-Nan Chen
Secretary-General, FACS
