FACS Newsletter 1/2001

Editorial

It is my great pleasure to present the first issue of FACS Newsletter in the beginning of 21 century. In this issue we include two articles from our new member societies: the Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society and the Mongolian Chemical Society. There are also articles introducing the Industrial Technology Research Institute located at Hsinchu, and Allied Industrial Corp. as the first producer of beta-carotene in Asia. The Newsletter intends to increase reports on chemical technologies, as a resolution by the 10th FACS General Assembly.

Going into the 21 century, the chemical industry in Asia is facing a number of new challenges. Particularly the fast advancements in biotechnology and materials will soon alter our way of daily live. It is clear that the role of Asia on world chemical technology becomes increasingly important. To team up the relationship of FACS and IUPAC, a joint conference of the World Chemistry Congress and 9ACC will be held at Brisbane in July 2001, along with AIMECS 01 meeting (Asian Federation of Medical Chemistry). Announcements of these events can be found inside.

Unfortunately we are unable to include recent reports of the FACS projects into this issue. The progresses of projects can be viewed on new web pages, which is created by ChIN under the guidance of Professor Xiaoxia Li. We hope, very soon, the contents of this Newsletter can also be released in similar electronic format. For the publication works, I am indebted to our executive editors, Drs. Jer-Young Chen and Huey Huey Lo, who did all the editing jobs voluntarily. Printing and mailing costs are kindly supported by the Chemical Society located in Taipei.
