FACS Newsletter 1/2000
Welcome Message
Dr. Hitoshi Ohtaki
the Past President of FACS
On behalf of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies, I wished to extend my
hearty welcome to all participants to
the Eighth Asian Chemical Congress which is organized by the colleagues of Taipei.
First of all, by representing all participants, I wish to express my deepest sympathy
to people in Taiwan who were damaged by the serious earthquake occurred two months
ago. The Organizing Committee of the Eighth Chemical Congress overcame the
difficulties caused by the catastrophic occasion and led the Congress to the highest
success.

The role of Asia in the world becomes more and more important in these decades
and the Eighth Asian Chemical Congress, which is held as the last ACC conference in the
20th Century, symbolizes the significant contribution of science and technology in Asia to
those in the world in the present Century. Of course, we can strongly expect that the
contribution will be sustained in the coming century and will be more important than that
in the 20th Century.
In this occasion, the Organizing Committee of the Eighth Chemical Congress has
invited three Nobel Laureates, Prof. Marcus and Prof. Corey from USA and Prof. Lee from
Taiwan. It is a very good opportunity to especially young scientists to talk with them to be
stimulated through personal conversations and information exchange of sciences with
them.
From 1901 to 1999, The Royal Swedish Academy of Science of awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry to 133 scientists, and among them we have two Nobel Laureates from
Asia, who are Prof. Fukui of Japan in 1981 and Prof. Lee of Taiwan in 1986, and he is here
in Taiwan. Since the development of chemistry in Asia is so remarkable in the last few
decades that we have a good reason of believing to have more Nobel Laureates from the
Asian region in the coming millennium. You, especially a young chemist in Asia, may be
one of them.
The present Asian Chemical Congress is a milestone of the new development of
chemistry in Asia to create new scopes of science and technology .We will find seeds of
new chemistry towards the coming 21st Century in the present congress.
Besides the scientific interests, Taiwan has many interesting spots to visit, to see and
learn their culture. Chinese foods in Taiwan is so famous that everyone in the world knows
it. I wish all participants to enjoy the chemistry of conference, the landscape, culture and
delicious foods of this island.
