1. BACKGROUND OF ASOMPS XI
With the aim of strengthening regional research potential and improving infrastructures in the Asian Region, the First Asian Symposium on Medicinal Plants and Species (ASOMPS I) was held in a small scale in Peshawar, Pakistan in 1960, mainly due to the effort of Professor Finn Sandberg (Uppsala University, Sweden) and financial supports from UNESCO and the International Foundation of Science (IFS, Sweden). Later on, all ASOMPS meetings were organized under the auspices of UNESCO, as a basic science program, to contribute to the strengthening of substantial financial assistance obtained from UNESCO head office through the Country Participation of the respective host countries. ASOMPS have also been regularly supported by IFS and the Regional Network for the Chemistry of Natural Products in Southeast Asia (RNCNPSA). Government of the respective host countries made generous contributions to the ASOMPS meetings. National Organizing Committee (NOC) of the respective host countries raised funds from different local and international organizations through donations, advertisements and exhibitions. The title of ASOMPS was modified as ¡°Asian Symposium on Medicinal Plants, Spices and Other Natural Products¡± from the 7th meeting in 1992 in Manila, Philippines. Up to now nine additional ASOMPS meetings have been held as follows: the Second (1964, Kandy, Sri Lanka), Third (1977, Colombo, Sri Lanka), Forth (1980, Bangkok, Thailand), Fifth (1984, Seoul, Korea), Sixth (1989, Bundung, Indonesia), Seventh (1992, Manila, Philippines), Eighth (1994, Melaka, Malaysia), Ninth (1998, Hanoi, Vietnam), and Tenth (2000, Dhaka, Bangladesh). Now ASOMPS has turned into a leading series of International Symposia with direct emphasis on natural products research. Presently, this event has been participated not only by Asian scientists, but also by a number of European and US scientists. The main topics of discussion in ASOMPS have been extended to relevant area of biomedical sciences as well.
During the 9th ASOMPS IX in 1998 in Hanoi, Vietnam, Professor Guo-Wei Qin, from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (CAS, China), the National Point of Contact Representatives (NPCRs) of RNCNPSA, who was attending the Symposium, made an application to the International Advisory Committee (IAC) of ASOMPS for holding ASOMPS XI in China, Shanghai or Kunming city. In the IAC meeting held during the Symposium, it was decided that ASOMPS XI would be held in China. Then Professor Qin discussed this issue with Professor Jun Zhou, Professor Han-Dong Sun and Professor Xiao-Jiang Hao of Kunming Institute of Botany (CAS, China). In January 2000 the city for ASOMPS XI was decided at Kunming, Yunnan, China after consulted by both sides.

2. ORGANIZATION OF ASOMPS XI
After ASOMPS XI was decided to be held in Kunming, China, the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of ASOMPS XI was formed while Professor Jun Zhou was appointed as Chairman and Professor Ning-Hua Tan as Secretary General of NOC. In March 2000, Professor Barry N Noller from National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology (Australia), Chairman of Asian Coordinating Group in Chemistry (ACGC), discussed some matters about ASOMPS XI organization with Professor Tan during his attendance of UNESCO Regional Symposium on Chemistry of Medicinal Plants (UNESCO RSCMP 2000) held in 17-19 March 2000 in Kunming, China. The Organizers, Sponsors, Time, Symbol, Theme, Topics, and other items of the 1st Announcement were fixed after several meeting of NOC in consultation with members of International Advisory Committee (IAC) and National Advisory Committee (NAC). Then the First Announcement of ASOMPS XI was printed after approved to held ASOMPS XI by Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB, CAS), Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM, CAS), UNESCO Regional Network for the Chemistry of Natural Products in Southeast Asia (UNESCO RNCNPSA) from Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of China, and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and distributed at the meeting when Professor Tan attended ASOMPS X in 2000 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which was widely distributed among scientists in the world and China later. For ASOMPS XI the Time is 27-31 October 2003, the Theme is Plant Resources, Chemistry, Pharmaceuticals and Health, and the Topics cover Plant Resources, Phytochemistry and Pharmaceuticals.
In April 2002 the NOC meeting was held in Kunming, China, in which some main members from Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB, CAS) and Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM, CAS) attended it. In the meeting some main matters about the 2nd Circular and Funds were discussed including member lists of NOC, NAC and IAC, Invited Speakers, fund applications, and so on. In October 2002 Professor Barry N Noller from National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology (Australia), Chairman of Asian Coordinating Group in Chemistry (ACGC), came to Kunming and discussed some matters about the 2nd Circular and fund applications with Professor Tan, including member lists of NOC, NAC and IAC, Invited Speakers, Venue, Scientific Program, Shanghai ASOMPS XI Post-Seminar, fund applications, and so on. In November 2002 the NAC and NOC joint meeting was held in Kunming, China, in which Invited Speakers and Scientific Program were discussed completely. The homepage of ASOMPS XI was opened on October 2002. Unfortunately during the first half of 2003 the organization of ASOMPS XI was stopped for SARS epidemic in the world. But in May 2003 the organization of ASOMPS XI was started immediately for completely control of SARS epidemic in the world. In June 2003 the 2nd Circular and Forms for registration of ASOMPS XI were printed and distributed quickly in China and all over the world. Until the open of ASOMPS XI the organization of the Symposium was carried forward with all the efforts of NOC members although the venue was moved from Kunming Hall into News Center in World Horti-Expo Garden and the Hotels from Bank Hotel Kunming and Baoshan Hotel into Expo Garden Hotel for the regulations of room price increase at hotels issued by the local government in order to return to normal touristry in Kunming after SARS epidemic.
