FACS Distinguish Young Chemist Award (Organic Chemistry 2001)

Margaret A. Brimble (The University of Auckland, New Zealand)

Margaret Brimble received her B Sc degree in Chemistry in 1982 and M Sc (1st Class) in 1983 from the University of Auckland and Ph D in Organic Chemistry from Southampton University, UK in 1986. She was a Lecturer in Chemistry, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand 1986-92, Invited Visiting Professor University of California, Berkeley, USA in 1992, Senior Lecture in Chemistry at University of Auckland 1993-94, Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry 1995-99 and subsequently Reader 1998 at University of Sydney, Australia. She was appointed as Professor of Organic Chemistry at University of Auckland in 1999.

Professor Brimble's major research interests are organic synthesis, natural products synthesis, asymmetric synthesis, carbohydrate chemistry, new generation antibiotics and the synthesis of insecticides and herbicides. She has published 103-refereed papers, 1 patent and 17 other publications.

Professor Brimble has received several academic awards, namely an NZ University Grants Committee Postgraduate Scholarship in 1983, Claude McCarthy fellowship1990, Prince and Princess of Wales Science Award, Royal Society of NZ Easterfield Medal 1992, an Ian Patter Foundation Award 1996 and the Distinguished Young Chemist Award from the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies in 2001.
