Background of ASOMPS Conference series The First Asian Synposium on Medicinal Plants and Spices was held at Peshawar, Pakistan in 1960; the Second at Kandy, Sri Lamka in 1964; and the Third was held at Colombo, Sri Lanka in February 1977 (Chairman M.U.S. Sultanbawa, Anura Jayewardene Secretary), under the auspices of UNESCO. The latter organisation set a budget for the Fourth Symposium as a continuation of the previous meetings. The Fourth Symposium was held at Bangkok, Thailand in 1980 (Kamchorn Manunapichu Chairman, Vichai Reutrakul Secretary). The acronym ¡°ASOMPS¡± was first introduced in the Fourth Symposium. In December 1978 the Executive Board of the Southeast Asia Regional Network for Natural Products at its meeting at Chiang Mai, Thailand, to hold the Fourth Asian Symposium on Medicinal Plants and Spices in Bangkok. The venues for the subsequent conferences were : ASOMPS 5 Seoul, Korea (1984), ASOMPS 6 Bandung, Indonesia (1989), ASOMPS 7 Manila, Philippines (1992) and ASOMPS 8, Melaka, Malaysia (1994).
