Objectives

• To create an impetus to the growing awareness of the need for developing the potential utilization of useful products from the Asian natural resources.
• To provide a venue wherein young Asian researchers can interact withinternational experts in research on natural products.
• To promote collaboration between scientists from various fields including chemistry, pharmacology, botany, biochemistry and biotechnology through their research on natural resources.
• To discuss and update the knowledge of recent developments of research on natural products in various fields.
• To guide the direction of research on natural products in developing countries for the benefit of the society.

Scope and topics

Papers dealing with all aspects of chemistry and biology of natural products (both flora and fauna) will be considered. The papers will be divided into six main groups:

• Chemistry of Medicinal Plants, Spices and Other Natural Products.
• Biological Studies of Natural Products
• Ethnobotany and Biodiversity
• Biochemistry and Biotechnology of Natural Products
• Product Development and Commercialization of Natural Products.
• Other topics.

An Open Forum on "Ethnobotany and Community Rights" will be held.

Official language and presentation facilities

All formal discussions and presentation at ASOMPS IX will be in English. The Overhead Projector and Slides will be used for lectures and oral presentation. The poster presentation panels will be available in size of 100cmx75cm.

Time allocation for presentation

The time will be 40 minutes for keynote speakers, 20 minutes for other oral presentations. Estimate presenting time should be announced in the form enclosed with abstract.

Poster boards of size 75cm x 100cm will be provided at the conference venue for poster presentation .

Venue

The venue selected for ASOMPS IX is La Thanh Hotel, Hanoi. It is about 2 km from the City Centre.

Registration fee will entitle to receive symposium materials, teas, lunches, banquet and airport transportation.

Submission of papers/abstracts

Authors who wish to contribute a paper are requested to indicate the title in the attached form. The abstracts should be submitted not later than 31 May 1998.

The abstract should be prepared according to the specified instructions and mailed to the Secretariat of ASOMPS IX as printed hard-copy together with a copy in diskette (PC compatible).

The Proceedings shall be printed after the Symposium and can be ordered during the Symposium.

Accommodation and transportation

The accommodation will be arranged at La Thanh hotel, the Symposium venue, and other hotels nearby. The average price for the twin share room is about USD 30 per night. Hotels are also available in the business centre with room rates varying from USD 45 to USD 70 per night.

The public transportation is convenient, the taxi cost is around USD 0.3/Km.

Transport for participants from NoiBai Airport will be arranged by the Secretariat. Participants should notify the Secretariat of their confirmed flight schedule in order to make proper arrangements for pick-up at the airport. Please notify flight details before 15 September 1998.

Climate and clothing

Mid-autumn is the best season in Hanoi. The weather in September is very nice with pleasant warm days in average temperature of 24-28 °C. For the opening ceremony and conference banquet, participants are requested to wear formal dress.

Passports, visas and customs

All oversea participants should have valid passports. The Entry visas are needed for most participants. Please contact the local travel agency or nearest Vietnamese Embassies, Vietnam Airlines agencies for details of the current immigration and customs regulations and advise the Secretariat if any difficulties are experienced.

Tentative Programme

The scientific programme will consists of series of plenary lectures, session lectures, free communications and poster presentations. A free afternoon will be interposed on 26th September.

Payment

One day hotel deposit and registration fee are requested to be paid to the Secretariat' account number not later than 31 May 1998. If in some countries the bank system is inconvenient, payment on the date of arrival will be accepted.

Please advise the Secretariat if this is the case.

Money matters

Vietnamese currency is known as Dong Vietnam (D). Most major world currencies are exchangeable in Vietnam, at either Banks or Hotels or at Authorized Money Changers. Travellers cheques and major credit cards such as VISA, MASTER CARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS are widely accepted throughout Vietnam. At present US$ 1.00 is equivalent to 13000 (D) but the exchange rate varies slightly according to the daily rate.
